Welcome to the Vale of Belvoir Cycling Club  

Formed in 2015, VBCC has become a well established cycling club with over 100 members across all cycling abilities. Centred around the rolling countryside of the Vale of Belvoir we offer a broad range of activities to suit all,  from regular organised social rides, rides specifically for women, junior coaching  all the way through to competitive training and racing, With so much on offer you are bound to find something within the club to help you get more out of your cycling.

Our members take part in a whole range of activities including
. road riding/races
· cycle sportives
· time trials
· track riding/racing
· Mountain Bike riding/racing
· Cyclo-Cross riding/racing
· Triathlons.

Through our Facebook pages our rides are organised such that members know start times, distances, speeds and routes (and where the café is) beforehand to allow maximum flexibility for those with busy lifestyles. We have regular club rides and members are also encouraged to create their own rides using the Facebook pages.
We are affiliated to British Cycling, CTT for time trialists, and the NDCXL for cyclocross riders.

Womens Cycling

Our Story

The women’s cycling side of our club started in January 2014 when our founder member was searching for a cycling club that offered women’s cycling in an environment that didn’t have a competitive feel to it. Lacking in confidence, she was looking for a cycling club where she could ride out with other like-minded women in a supportive atmosphere; a club where everyone was welcoming and friendly regardless of her ability, her fitness level, the kit she was wearing or the bike she was riding.

When she couldn’t find a club locally that offered women only cycle rides, Bingham Women’s Cycling was born. It started very small with rides organised via a Facebook page. The main aim was to encourage and support women into cycling, to ride their bikes together and to create a really welcoming environment where everyone felt encouraged and supported, whatever their ability or bike.

This small group of friends grew and in January 2015 Bingham Women’s Cycling club took the decision to join forces with another new club in the area, Bingham and Newton Cycling Club, who were keen to attract more female members. Together we are the Vale of Belvoir Cycling Club.

Our Ethos

The ethos of women’s cycling at the Vale of Belvoir Cycling Club hasn’t changed; our main aim is still to encourage and welcome more women into cycling whatever their ability, and it always will be.

Having specific women’s only rides and events makes us different to many other clubs locally and we hope it will continue to be a club where women feel comfortable to ride their bikes without fear of judgement.

We want you to join us and have fun riding your bike! We have our own Facebook page specifically for our female members, which offers a friendly source of support and community with details of planned women only rides. Vale of Belvoir Women’s Cycling prides itself in offering a club environment with no pressure – just fun on two wheels with other like-minded lovely ladies. We have various rides catering for all abilities and we always include a stop for coffee, cake and a chat!

Of course, if you want to, or prefer to ride in a mixed-sex group, we have lots of ride that cater for that too. So, whatever you’re looking for from a cycling club, we hope the Vale of Belvoir Cycling Club will meet your needs.

Many of our members enjoy riding together and have achieved so much riding with us.

About Breeze Rides

We support Breeze Cycling and the club has a number of Breeze trained ride leaders.  All our Breeze rides are posted on the Women’s Facebook page, so you can book onto these as soon as they are posted!!

I became a Breeze Champion for several reasons, the main one being to give back the help and support I received when I started cycling with the women’s group back in 2014. I think the Breeze initiative is a fantastic idea and if I can in any way encourage women to get on their bikes and have a go, then I’m helping Breeze achieve what they have set out to do.Type your paragraph here.

Juniors Coaching

VBCC are scheduling 6 sessions dedicated to Junior coaching. Please see the Q&A below for details of what is planned and how to get involved


Q: Who is coaching for?
Basically any junior who can already ride a bike but who is looking to develop their performance and knowledge by learning and practising cycling techniques in a traffic-free environment.

Q: What does coaching involve?
The coaching sessions will be based on the 3 key areas of core cycling, bike handling and group riding techniques.

Q: Is there a required standard / minimum age in order to take part?
Children / juniors should be of at least full-time school age and be able to ride a bicycle unaided (and without the use of stabilisers).

Q: Where will the coaching take place, when and at what time?
Bingham Leisure Centre running track (at the top of the playing fields) will be the primary coaching venue, which provides an all-weather surface and foodlights.  Occasional sessions will be held at the Harvey Hadden cycle racing circuit in Bilborough.

Places for each coaching block will be filled on a first come, first served basis.

In total in the current block there are 6 sessions, all at: 11.45 to 12.30 on –

  • Saturday 1st July
  • Saturday 8th July
  • Saturday 15th July
  • Saturday 22nd July
  • Saturday 29th July
  • Saturday 5th August

Coaching will then resume with a autumn block September and October getting ready for the cyclo cross season.

Q: How much does each session cost?
Each coaching block will be £20 for six sessions.

Q: What equipment do I need? / What do I need to bring along to the coaching sessions?

  • A bike (in good maintained condition and with two working brakes), helmet, suitable clothing and footwear.
  • Road bikes, hybrid bikes and mountain bikes are all acceptable.
  • BMX bikes are generally not suitable as they usually only have one brake.  Unfortunately, balance bikes are not permitted.
  • Water bottle.
  • Regrettably, if participants attend sessions without a helmet, wearing inappropriate clothing and/or with bikes in an unsuitable condition then they will be unable to take part in that particular session.

Q: Who will be conducting the coaching?
The coaching sessions will be run by Head Coach Matt Byrne, a founder member of VBCC and a British Cycling Level 2 qualified coach, the nationally recognised qualification for coaching cycling.  Matt has been a keen road cyclist for the past 7 years and helped establish VBCC in 2014.  The provision of access to cycle coaching for members is one of VBCC’s key development areas.

Matt holds a valid and current Emergency First Aid Certificate, a current Enhanced Certificate from the Disclosure & Barring Service for coaching children and vulnerable adults registered with the British Cycling Federation and has successfully completed EduCare’s Child Protection in Sport and Active Leisure Level 2.

Matt is also a member of British Cycling and VBCC.

Please note, although Matt will be running the coaching sessions, he may require some occasional voluntary assistance from parents / spectators, depending on group sizes.

We now have a further four British Cycling Level 1 qualified coaches who will be helping deliver the coaching program for VBCC. Glyn Horsfield (VBCC Junoir Development VBCC Committee) Peter Robinson (VBCC Committe) and Ruth Russell and Ross Glendinning.

Q: Are the coaching sessions insured?
As a British Cycling qualified coach and member, Matt has the benefit of the following insurance protection in respect of his coaching sessions:

Public Liability insurance – £10m (limit of indemnity)
Professional Indemnity insurance – £5m (limit of indemnity)

Please note that it is a requirement for ALL participants in any coaching sessions to have completed and submitted a Rider Information and Coaching Consent form prior to taking part. Please return back to Glyn at glynahorsfield@gmail.com or mattbyrne74@gmail.com – the form is a pre-requisite to attend and no exceptions will be made.

Q: How do I book my Child a place?

To book this session, please please complete the Coaching Consent form (download above) and email back to Glyn at glynahorsfield@gmail.com or mattbyrne74@gmail.comand.

Payment of £20 for all 6 session will then need to be made on-line into the club account (Account number 69215332. Sort Code 600241) with the child’s name as reference.

Q: Anything else you need to be aware of:

Finally, on the day, ensure that your child brings a drink to stay hydrated, layers as it can blow a chilly wind on the top track, and it is essential that they have visited the toilet ahead of the session as ferrying kids back and forth will interrupt the 45 minute schedule.
